I had to laugh when I read this article. Not because of rising water along the coast of this Thai village. But because some villager thinks we westerners should buy her a new village.

Another example of "farang's fault". So be it.

Yeah, this is great stuff. Blame the foreigners so we don't have to think about our stupidity. The Thai says:

"the international community should come to help because they started the problem."

The article says:

"Over 30 years, the sea around Khun Samut Chin village has engulfed more than one kilometre (0.6 miles) of land, World Bank figures show, mostly because fishermen have cut down mangrove forests -- the Earth's natural sea barrier."

A few years ago there were damaging and even deadly mudslides in Petchabun province. Several villages were virtually buried.

My Mrs knew the area and told me the villagers had clear cut the timber on the hills around them to sell. The scrub growth that replaced the trees simply could not hold the soil in place in heavy rains. She added that she had no sympathy for them, since it was caused by their own greed.

Similar story here, though the seas definitely are rising. These villagers made a bad situation even worse.

Coastal erosion of varying degrees affects 21 percent of Thailand's coastline, says Greenpeace climate campaigner Tara Buakamsri, citing figures from Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.

Along the Gulf of Thailand, seaside areas seriously affected by erosion are receding at a rate of five to 20 metres per year.

A worry for them ..

p.s. Come to think of it, less than 2000 years ago Nakorn Pathom is supposed to have been on the sea!

I'm sure some smart "International" lawyers are ringing her already.

I'll be happy to donate some money to help them out. Just tell the villagers to send their good looking girls to Bangkok to collect my contribution.
